A windows update?

I recently had a problem after downloading a windows update. I spotted the shield icon in the task bar(?) and downloaded it there and then whilst still connected to the 'net. Previously, I haven't usually spotted the icon before and the update has only been installed when I've come to switch this infernal machine off. I never had a problem doing it that way so that's the way I'm going to do it from now on!!
